TATA ©Kasun Ashok Leyland SLTB bus Unlike the garishly embellished (usually) white privately owned buses in Sri Lanka, the Govt. run SLTB buses are a mundane crimson and are decidedly more rickety and smoke belching. Here is one of the better specimens of a SLTB bus near Piradeniya, Sri Lanka. (June 2011). © S. Shankar Some of the older SLTB buses sometimes sport a two tone livery, like this red and cream version seen here. Such buses I was told do short distance local runs like school bus services etc. This is an old Indian built Tata with a modified front end. Taken near Habarena, June 2011. © S. Shankar I was amazed to see several of these India built Tata 909 buses all over Sri Lanka. I thought the model had been discontinued by Tata long, long ago. This specimen was just leaving the bus station at (I think) Matale Sti Lanka. June 2011. © S. Shankar In absolute contrast to the mundane crimson of the Govt.run SLTB bus, private buses in Sri Lanka are almost invariable white, and are rather garishly embellished. And while the front is bright and colourful enough, it\’s the rear ends of the buses that really take the cake! Here are two garishly done up specimens (both Lanka Ashok Leyland) on private charger at the Polonurwa ruins. Sri Lanka, June 2011. © S. Shankar The Govt.run SLTB has a mixed fleet of mostly Lanka Ashok Leyland vehicles, with a few India built Tata and a sprinkling of elderly Isuzu vehicles. I saw at least one Routemaster double decker, but I was told most of these have been now retired. Here is one of the SLTB Tata buses passing our car near Kandy. I was told that the SLTB authorities believe that Tata vehicles are better for steep hill roads. As such, most buses around the Kandy area are Tata. Sri Lanka, June 2011. © S. Shankar Nearest camera is one of the typical privately run buses in Sri Lanka. Most of them are Lanka Ashok Leyland. You can see another one behind this bus. Further behind is one of the less numerous India built Tata buses. On either side of the Leyland you see some of the oddball light buses doing comparatively shorter distance runs. Apart from cut chassis Tata or light Tata 909 buses, you see mostly Mitsubishi Rosa, with a handful of Toyota Coasters, as seen. Sri Lanka, June 2011. © S. Shankar
Two of the relatively rare plain Jane Lanka Ashok Leylands enter the bus terminus in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Already in and waiting for passengers are a light Toyota Coaster (nearest camera) and Mitsubishi Rosa (behind it). Sri Lanka, June 2011. © S. Shankar A privately owned Lanka Ashok Leyland at the gates of the Minneriya National Park in Sri Lanka. The bus was probably on private charter, as neither the destination boards not the traffic originating from the park gates would have justified running a dedicated services to that location. Sri Lanka, June 2011. © S. Shankar A tour bus of Korean/ Japanese origin at Habarena. The bus is emerging from a road that is barely wider than the bus itself, from a location that offers hour long elephant rides. The bus was almost on top of us, we had to reverse several times to let it pass. Sri Lanka, June 2011. © S. Shankar Two Lanka Ashok Leyland buses await passengers just outside the gates of the sprawling Galle Fort in Sri Lanka. June 2011.
