Natural gas power in Chongquing In areas of China where natural gas is found in abundance, buses such as this one which operates between Chongquing and Luzhou in Sichuan Province, run with low-pressure gas bags mounted on the roof . The environmental credentials are excellent, but the potential for explosion appears to be great. © Stuart Shelton

Shanghai Super Capacitor Bus This Sunwin SWB5115GP trolleybus, minus trolley gear, is running under battery power on Shanghai route 11. Instead of relying on constant contact with an electrical source, it stores all its power in capacitors, which are recharged by means of an extending platform from the roof, making contact with strategically placed recharging gantries along the route. Inconsiderate motorists who park under the gantries are not welcome! ©Andy McClelland
